"(I've Had) The Time of My Life" is a 1987 song composed by Franke Previte, John DeNicola, and Donald Markowitz.[2] It was recorded by Beak Medley and Jennifer Warnes, and used every bit the theme vocal for the 1987 picture show Dirty Dancing.[2] The vocal has won a number of awards, including the Academy Award for All-time Original Vocal, the Gilded Globe Accolade for Best Original Song, and the Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance past a Duo or Grouping with Vocals.

History [edit]

Vocaliser-songwriter Previte was the atomic number 82 vocalist of the band Franke and the Knockouts. He had success with the vocal "Sweetheart" in 1981, but by 1986 was without a recording contract. In tardily 1986 or early 1987, producer and head of Millennium Records, Jimmy Ienner, asked Previte about writing some music for "a petty movie chosen Muddied Dancing". Previte initially turned the request down because he was yet trying to get a record deal,[3] and he idea the moving-picture show was a pornographic motion-picture show based on the title,[4] merely Ienner was persistent, declaring that information technology would "change his life", and got Previte to write several songs for the picture show, including "Hungry Eyes", afterwards recorded past vocalizer Eric Carmen, which also became a top 10 striking.

Previte wrote the lyrics, and the music was written past John DeNicola and Don Markowitz. He compared writing the vocal to the writing process of "MacArthur Park". The title was conceived at random while he was traveling down the Garden State Parkway. He suggested that Ienner's pleading inspired the lyric.[5] After getting further approval, Previte, along with DeNicola and Markowitz, created a demo of the vocal, performing on information technology himself, along with vocaliser Rachele Cappelli. The demo showcased how the harmonies were to be used, employing a "cold open", or a ho-hum build-up of the song to its finale.

A vocal by Lionel Richie was initially planned to be used every bit the finale of Dirty Dancing,[6] simply choreographer Kenny Ortega and his assistant Miranda Garrison (who also played Vivian in the film) selected "The Time of My Life" instead. This demo wasn't used in the final cut of the moving picture − the more polished version with Warnes and Medley was. However, because the Warnes/Medley runway was non ready by the time the finale was filmed (information technology was shot beginning, due to the tight upkeep), Previte and Capelli's much lighter and more youthful version was used as a backing track, and then that the actors, Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Greyness, and the dancers, could have something to dance to. (Swayze later remarked that it was his favorite version, even including all the subsequent remakes.) The demo version finally appeared on the 1998 CD reissue of Previte's 1981 album Franke and the Knockouts, merely is only listed as "Bonus Rails".

The movie's writer, Eleanor Bergstein, wanted a famous 1960s singer to perform information technology to blend then-contemporary musical elements with the aesthetics of the period.[seven] The song was initially intended for Donna Summer and Joe Esposito, merely Summer turned it down because she didn't like the title of the moving-picture show.[8] Afterward, producer Michael Lloyd approached Daryl Hall of Hall & Oates and singer-songwriter Kim Carnes to perform; they declined every bit well.[9] In response, Bill Medley of the Righteous Brothers was approached by Jimmy Ienner repeatedly over two months to do the recording, but he also turned it down because his girl McKenna was due to be born, and he had promised his wife he would be there. He was also concerned well-nigh actualization in another song that would flop (as had happened with "Loving on Borrowed Time" with Gladys Knight, from the soundtrack for Cobra) and likewise thought the title was "like a bad porno movie".[half-dozen]

Ienner then approached Jennifer Warnes, who had released a cover of Leonard Cohen songs the previous year. She initially expressed reluctance upon hearing Previte'due south demo, just was persuaded (because of Ienner offer a big sum of coin) by her then-young man to have the offer, on the condition that she could sing it with Medley, whom she admired.[7] Every bit a upshot, after the birth of his daughter, Medley was approached once again, this fourth dimension with Warnes' offer.[ten] Medley then agreed to tape the track, having also admired her singing, on the condition that he record the vocal in Los Angeles.

To give emotional depth to the song, Warnes had a video playback automobile and footage of the final scene brought in to synchronize her singing with the picture's ending scene, especially "the elevator". Later completing the main vocals, Medley and Warnes were asked by Lloyd to add additional harmonies and flourishes for the vocal.[7] The vocal was completed in around one hr.[4] The resulting mix was described every bit a "Righteous Brothers-type song" by DeNicola.[7]

The song was originally released on July x, 1987; it was intended to be released aslope the film, but the flick'due south producer Vestron Pictures had moved the American release date to Baronial without notifying RCA Records. Ienner quickly edited the vocal from the original 6:46 to iv:50 for radio airplay.[7] With the release of the film it became a worldwide hit, and is one of the about frequently played songs on radio.
